CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Cleveland Heights Fire Department is hoping the public can offer some help as investigators continue to look into the cause of a fire Friday night that destroyed an apartment complex that was under construction.
The department is asking for any videos or pictures that show the fire in its early stages or prior to the arrival of firefighters, which is between 7 and 7:45 p.m. Investigators also hope people will provide tips on whether they noticed anything unusual in the area before the fire started.
Information can be submitted online with the Fire and Arson Tip Form.
The fire took place at one of two apartment buildings which are part of Marquee at Cedar Lee, a $60 million mixed-use development that broke ground in May 2023.
By 10:30 p.m. Friday night, flames were shooting through the structure. Smoke blew north toward Heights High School, the city said. The fire department blocked off the Cedar-Lee intersection, a vibrant street of shops, restaurants and a movie theater, as well as Cedar Road eastbound starting at Kildare Road.
All Heights High School events were later canceled so firefighters could use the area surrounding the complex to work on the fire scene, Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District posted early afternoon Saturday on its Facebook page. The district said this includes a basketball game that was scheduled for Saturday.
There were no injuries reported in the fire, which took hours to bring under control and required mutual aid from several other area fire departments.
