BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — The Fairview Fire Department has confirmed the loss of one of its own in the line of duty during rescue operations in response to the impact of Hurricane Helene.
The firefighter, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, died on Sept. 27 while assisting in rescue efforts amid record-breaking flooding in the region, the department posted on social media.
Fairview Fire Chief Scott Jones expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the public for the outpouring of support the department has received, and he extended his deepest sympathies to the families affected by the storm.
“We ask everyone to keep our firefighter’s family in their thoughts and prayers,” Chief Jones said. “This loss is a profound tragedy for our department and our community.”
The department also extended a special thanks to the hundreds of emergency responders and support personnel who have traveled to aid in the hurricane recovery efforts.
Further details regarding the firefighter’s identity will be released once all family members have been notified.
