Israeli forces have confirmed the death of 61-year-old Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas and a key figure behind the group’s military operations, including the notorious October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel that left over 1,200 dead. Sinwar was killed during a ground operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) identified his body in a tunnel complex where a firefight had occurred. DNA testing was used to confirm his identity.
The Israeli Defense Force and the Shin Bet intelligence agency put out a joint press release on the matter, stating they can:
“confirm that after a year long pursuit, yesterday, October 16, 2024 IDF soldiers from the Southern Command eliminated Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization, in an operation in the southern Gaza Strip.”
Hamas did not immediately confirm Sinwar’s death.
Officially, Sinwar had been Leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip since February of 2017. He was also Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau. At the time he was elected, Sinwar said he sought “peaceful, popular resistance.” He has also been quoted as saying that his goal was to “eradicate” Israel.
During his time in office, Sinwar developed strong ties with Iran. He survived an assassination attempt by Israel in 2021.
He is thought by many to be the mastermind behind the 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel, which were two years in the planning. During that time, he brought Hezbollah and Iran in on his plans yet still managed to maintain the element of surprise during the attacks.

In 1988, Sinwar was arrested for killing four Israelis. He reportedly strangled one with his bare hands, suffocated one with a kaffiyeh, killed the third accidentally during a violent interrogation and inadvertently shot and killed the fourth during an attempt to abduct him. He we given four live sentences and spent many years in an Israeli prison.

In 2004, Sinwar started to experience neck pain and fainting spells. Doctors suspected a neurological issue and hospitalized him. It was there that they found he had a brain tumor. In what was to become a twist of irony, Israeli surgeons operated on him and saved his life. This fact, however, did not change his ideology. He was released from prison in 2011 in a swap for Israeli prisoners Hamas was holding.
Free again, Sinwar, known for his radical ideology and unwavering commitment to Israel’s destruction, played a crucial role in Hamas’s shift towards more aggressive tactics, including reviving suicide bombings. His leadership saw an escalation in hostilities between Hamas and Israel, which significantly intensified following the October 2023 cross-border assaults.
His death marks a significant blow to Hamas, potentially affecting the group’s operational capabilities and influencing negotiations for the release of hostages held by the organization.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Sinwar’s elimination creates a strategic opportunity to pressure Hamas to release hostages. However, the broader implications for the ongoing conflict and regional stability remain uncertain.
