West Point’s Response
West Point has acted swiftly to comply with President Trump’s executive orders targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. On February 5, 2025, the U.S. Military Academy disbanded 12 student organizations that focused on gender, ethnicity, race, and sexuality. Among the clubs shut down were the Asian-Pacific Forum Club, the National Society of Black Engineers, the Latin Cultural Club, the Society of Women Engineers, Spectrum (a group for LGBTQ cadets), the Native American Heritage Forum, and the Vietnamese-American Cadet Association.
Deputy Commandant Chad Foster issued a memo outlining strict requirements for these organizations, ordering them to immediately cease all activities, remove or deactivate all public-facing content, cancel planned trips, meetings, and events, and stop using government time, resources, or facilities for any informal activities. Additionally, West Point has placed all other sanctioned student clubs on hold until they can be reviewed for compliance with the new policies.
The academy justified these actions by citing President Trump’s executive orders, along with guidance from the Department of Defense and the Department of the Army.
