US Approves Japan’s $39M Long-Range Missiles Purchase – SOFREP News Team

In a significant move to bolster regional security in the Indo-Pacific, the US State Department has recently approved a $39 million foreign military sale to Japan for up to 16 AGM-158B/B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with Extended Range (JASSM-ER) and associated equipment.

This sale underscores the growing defense cooperation between the two nations and Japan’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities to address emerging threats from North Korea and China.

A Closer Look at the JASSM-ER

Manufactured by Lockheed Martin, the AGM-158B/B-2 JASSM-ER is a highly advanced cruise missile designed for long-range precision strikes.

Utilizing GPS guidance and an internal navigation system, the missile follows a preprogrammed path to its target.

Equipped with a 1,000lb warhead and an imaging infrared seeker, the JASSM-ER is capable of striking targets with remarkable accuracy from up to 900 kilometers (559 miles) away.

Its flexibility allows it to be launched from various aircraft, including Japan’s F-15J and F-35 fleets.

This sale also includes crucial non-major defense equipment such as dummy air training missiles, anti-jam GPS receivers, spare parts, integration and testing support, and logistics services.

These additions will ensure the seamless integration of the JASSM-ER into the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) while supporting training and operational readiness.
