US Approves $84M Small Diameter Bomb Sale to Strengthen Romania’s Air Force – SOFREP News Team

The US State Department has recently approved Romania’s request for a significant defense acquisition, authorizing the potential sale of multiple Guided Bomb Unit (GBU)-39B Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs) valued at $84 million.

This approval marks a critical step in Romania’s continued efforts to modernize its military and participate more actively in NATO coalition air operations.

The GBU-39B Small Diameter Bombs: A Precision Strike Weapon

Boeing’s GBU-39B SDB is a precision-guided air-to-surface weapon designed to deliver a low-cost and low-collateral-damage strike.

Operational since 2006, the GBU-39B is known for its effectiveness in hitting targets with minimal unintended damage, making it a valuable tool for modern air forces engaged in sensitive operations.

Each SDB is 70.8 inches (180 cm) long, 7.5 inches (19 cm) wide, and can hit targets up to 60 nautical miles (approximately 69 miles or 111 kilometers) away.

The weapon relies on an inertial navigation system and global positioning system (GPS) to ensure pinpoint accuracy, allowing for highly effective strikes even from extended ranges.

Romania plans to acquire 400 GBU-39B SDB-I units, along with a few GBU-39 (T-1)/B inert practice bombs, which will provide the country with a robust capability to engage in modern, precision air strikes.

Supporting Equipment and Program Enhancements

Along with the GBU-39B SDBs, Romania’s purchase includes critical supporting equipment to maximize the effectiveness of these advanced weapons.
