The Bolduc Brief: The Journey of Political Service – A Veteran’s Perspective – Donald Bolduc

The Decision to Enter Politics: A Calling to Serve

Running for political office is a daunting endeavor that requires an unwavering commitment to serve one’s community and country. As a candidate representing a political party, the journey is laden with external and internal challenges that test one’s patience, resolve, values, and dedication. My journey, followed by a 36-year military career that saw me rise from the ranks of private to sergeant to general, has deeply informed my understanding of sacrifice and service, values that resonate profoundly within me.

The decision to enter the political arena came not merely as an opportunity but as a calling—a chance to advocate for the principles I hold dear and to extend my service to my fellow citizens in a new capacity. Each step along this path has reinforced my belief in the importance of leadership grounded in integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the community.

When influential leaders, business figures, and members of the political elite approached me with the invitation to run for office, I felt a mix of honor and trepidation. It acknowledged my commitment to service and represented a significant shift in my life’s work. The challenges ahead were clear:

Navigating the complexities of political campaigns.
Addressing the diverse needs of constituents.
Standing firm against the inevitable opposition that arises in the political landscape.

Running for office, mainly as a candidate representing a political party, is an arduous journey filled with external and internal challenges. As I embarked on my campaign, aiming to advocate for the values I held dear and to serve my community and country, I encountered a sobering truth: the pressure to conform to party lines and appeal to a broad base can lead to behaviors that are not only inappropriate but also contrary to my values.

I was caught in a whirlwind of criticisms, expectations, and strategies in the heat of political competition. The need to resonate with voters and gain support from influential party members often overshadowed my commitment to authenticity and integrity. In my quest to secure a position of influence, I felt compelled to adopt a persona that, at times, veered away from my true self. This included making statements I later recognized as unkind or misrepresentative of my genuine beliefs.

Where integrity is often overshadowed by wealth and influence, the contrast between the principles I stand for and the actions of some of my critics can be particularly upsetting. It raises profound questions about the nature of leadership, accountability, and the values we uphold as a society.

As I transitioned into the political arena, I encountered a troubling reality: many who seek to judge or undermine my candidacy have sometimes engaged in dishonorable behavior. This includes individuals who have committed crimes, manipulated systems for personal gain, or exploited their financial resources to gain undue advantages.
