Russian Special Forces Commander Killed in Ukraine – Guy D. McCardle

As recently published in Newsweek, a Russian Special Forces commander has been liquidated in Ukraine.

According to Eastern European news source Nexta, which relayed its message through Telegram on Thursday, March 7th, Alexey Ivanov, a leader of the “Peresvet” Spetsnaz unit, was targeted and killed by the 30th mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces through aerial surveillance.

The platform Russian Officers Killed in Ukraine (KIU), known for documenting Russian military fatalities through various public sources, also reported that Ivanov’s death was the result of a drone-dropped grenade.

Despite the detailed reports, neither source provided specific details on the time or place of the event. However, KIU referenced a tribute dated March 1 on the Russian social platform VKontakte by Yaroslav Yaroslavtsev, signifying Ivanov’s impact. Yaroslavtsev shared his personal recollections of Ivanov, mentioning his call sign “Fagot” and highlighting his dedication and leadership qualities, particularly during a moment when he chose to stay with his men despite sustaining injuries.

Kislovodsk Medical College, situated in Russia’s Stavropol region, acknowledged Ivanov’s prior service up to 2011, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and being honored with the Order of Courage. His commitment led him to volunteer for the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, where he ultimately sacrificed his life, branded as a patriotic act by the college.

This incident adds to the significant number of officer losses Russia has faced since the onset of the conflict. KIU’s count indicates thousands of high-ranking military personnel casualties. As of March 1, the tally included various ranks, from lieutenant general to senior lieutenants.

Concurrently, Ukraine reported a substantial total of Russian casualties, combining both fatalities and injuries, as the confrontation continues to unfold with no foreseeable end in sight.
