Today’s SOFREP Pic of the Day highlights the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces training with Howa type 20 rifles.

What is the Howa Type 20?

Here is a rifle you are not likely to spot at the local firing range: the Howa Type 20.

The Howa Type 20 is a modern assault rifle developed by the Japanese company Howa Machinery, Ltd. This firearm was officially adopted by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) in May 2020, marking a significant update to Japan’s small arms capabilities. The Type 20 is intended to replace the older Type 89 rifle, which has been in service since the 1980s, reflecting advancements in firearm technology and changing tactical requirements.

The Type 20 was designed with modern warfare and operational needs in mind, featuring improvements in ergonomics, reliability, and adaptability to various combat scenarios. It is chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge, facilitating interoperability and logistic support in international missions should the need arise.
