FRISCO, Texas — FireRescue1 launched its annual What Firefighters Want survey on Friday, with this year’s theme focused on the fire service’s safety culture, including the relationship between aggressive firefighting tactics and departmental policies and directives.
The survey will be used to inform FireRescue1’s state-of-the-industry annual report, which will be published in July 2025 and feature expert analysis from fire service leaders.

FireRescue1 Editor-in-Chief Janelle Foskett explained why the team chose to sharpen the focus on aggressive fireground tactics and safety culture for the 2025 survey:
“There’s a lot of buzz around the term ‘aggressive’ these days, so we wanted to dig into the root of the rhetoric. We’d love to know how members define aggressive tactics, not only for themselves, but what that looks like at the department level. It’ll be very enlightening to see how fire department tactics and policies align with real-world fireground behaviors.”
The What Firefighters Want project is supported by the International Public Safety Data Institute (IPSDI), which helps with survey development and analysis efforts, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), which offers promotional support.
