PORTLAND, Conn. — A volunteer firefighter was killed after being struck by a vehicle while walking on Main Street on Wednesday, police said.
Portland police Officer Paul Liseo said the crash happened at approximately 4:18 p.m. Wednesday in front of the police station. He said the pedestrian was a man in his 50s who died from his injuries. He later said the man struck was a firefighter.
Liseo said the man was crossing from the area where the police headquarters is located to the opposite side of the street near Melilli Cafe & Grill. He said he was not responding to an incident as a firefighter at the time he was struck.
The driver of the vehicle stayed on the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Liseo said.
Main Street was closed from Waverly Avenue to Marlborough Street , part of Route 66 , following the crash. It had reopened by 10:15 p.m.
