Since launching this initiative in early 2023, the Czech Republic has utilized its diplomatic, business, and industrial networks to procure large-caliber ammunition from global sources.

The ammunition shipments have been made possible through funding provided by NATO allies, demonstrating a collective effort to bolster Ukraine’s warfighting capacity.

Delivery of 1.6 Million Shells and Ongoing Support

The Czech-led initiative has already delivered 1.6 million rounds of large-caliber ammunition to Ukraine, a substantial contribution that has significantly aided Ukrainian forces.

Among these deliveries, 500,000 shells are specifically 155mm artillery rounds, a critical component of Ukraine’s heavy artillery systems.

The remaining rounds include other types of shells exceeding 100mm caliber, further strengthening Ukraine’s arsenal.

Last October, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala confirmed that the initiative was on track to meet its target of delivering half a million shells by the end of 2024.

However, this target applied exclusively to 155mm rounds, meaning that the broader contribution of large-caliber ammunition is far greater. This supply effort ensures that Ukraine maintains sufficient firepower for continued resistance against Russian forces.

The Strategic Importance of Czech Support

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Prague has remained a steadfast supporter of Kyiv, delivering military aid, including air assets, fighting vehicles, and ammunition. In March 2024, the Czech Republic completed the delivery of the last two of eight Mi-24 attack helicopters to Ukraine, reinforcing the country’s air power.

Additionally, Czech arms manufacturer Colt CZ Group has entered into an agreement with Ukraine’s defense industry to begin assembling NATO-standard rifles domestically. This agreement not only strengthens Ukraine’s defense manufacturing capabilities but also enhances long-term self-sufficiency.

In another show of solidarity, the Czech Republic and Denmark announced a joint initiative in October 2023 to supply armored vehicles, tanks, and thousands of firearms to Ukrainian forces. “Now we cannot afford to – so to speak – take the foot off the gas, when the finish may be somewhere in the fog ahead within sight, but we will have to support Ukraine at least until some peace agreement is implemented and until we are sure Ukraine can stand on its own feet,” Pavel said at a news conference shown live on Czech television, cited from Reuters.
