Project TROUBLER: The UK MoD’s Mission to Upgrade Infantry Firepower – SOFREP News Team

The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set its sights on modernizing the firepower available to its dismounted infantry with the launch of Project TROUBLER, a competitive tender aimed at procuring a new 5.56mm lightweight assault machine gun.

This initiative, announced last Friday, February 14, is intended to replace the decommissioned L110 A2, a 7.1 kg (15.7 lbs) machine gun that previously served in conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

The contract for this next-generation weapon is valued at up to £4 million ($5 million), and interested suppliers have until March 24, 2025, to submit their proposals.

The Need for a New Lightweight Machine Gun

The discontinuation of the L110 A2 created a capability gap in the British infantry’s arsenal. While effective in its time, the aging system has become increasingly incompatible with modern battlefield demands.

The MoD now seeks a solution that is not only lighter and more mobile but also better suited for prolonged engagements and diverse combat environments.

The goal is to improve mobility for soldiers on foot without sacrificing firepower or reliability.

According to the tender notice, the new machine gun must be lighter than its predecessor, a critical factor in reducing the load burden on infantry personnel.

Additionally, it must be interoperable with various accessories and fire control systems, ensuring seamless integration with existing equipment.
